Highlights

  • Discover this masterpiece of Portuguese architecture, Jerónimos Monastery, with its detailed structural cloisters, corridors, vaulted ceilings, and decorative entrance.

  • Create a hassle-free itinerary with a Lisbon Card which will give you access to sites like the Belém Tower, the National Costume Museum, the National Museum of the Azulejo, and more, with free transportation.

The cloister is very beautiful. But the entrances are poorly organized because after a long one to enter the monastery you had to make another one to visit the free church with Vasco de Gama's tomb. It would be better if those who enter the monastery then could also enter the church directly, perhaps by having a quota of people interested only in the church and a quota of people who have visited the Monastery. The staff handling the entrances is rude.

Although the place is beautiful and well worth a visit, the queue was huge in the strong sun and it took more than an hour to get in. Inside, it's organized!

We were only able to see the Monestary, did not see the high choir room if it was open and the church was not available, the audio guide was confusing and every time you took a picture and returned to the audio guide it had to me downloaded again. (Android device)

The monastery is simply amazing, a must-see if you go to Lisbon and decide to go to Belém. You will be amazed. And the attention on arrival was very good, they helped my mom to pass before since she has a mobility problem.

A Portuguese national monument since 1907 and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, the Jerónimos Monastery is one of the highest symbols of medieval Portuguese architecture. Historically and artistically connected to the Belém Tower, both these notable landmarks of Lisbon were built on the initiative of King Manuel I, who ruled between 1495 and 1521. The Belém Tower was built not only to protect the port of Lisbon but also for the Jerónimos Monastery.

Soak up the different elements that make up this stunning model of Manueline architectural style including Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance styles. The two levels of cloisters are so intricate and filled with structural detail that they took a hundred years to be completed! Spot mythical creatures like gargoyles and marine animals within the carvings, columns, and arches. Don’t miss the vaulted ceilings on the lower level of the monastery or the views from the higher level of the adjacent Church of Santa Maria de Belém.
